So it's Rangers against St Mirren in the Co-operative Insurance Cup final on Sunday, 21 March after the two sides in maroon - Hearts and St Johnstone - came up short in the semi-finals. Thanks for your company tonight. I hope you have enjoyed the game, whether you watched on BBC TV, listened to the radio or followed the game here. We hope to see you on Saturday when our Scottish Premier League coverage continues.

2126: Rangers' Steve Davis has been named man of the match by the TV guys on BBC One Scotland. The midfielder was maybe not as exciting as he was in the weekend win over Falkirk, but he was influential once more.

Full time
Full-time: Rangers 2-0 St Johnstone. Rangers ease to victory in the end, taking their goals clinically and defending their lead fairly comfortably in an entertaining game played in poor conditions.

"Rangers have defended really well. Saints have matched them in so many departments, but Rangers have got the goals and Saints have suffered that area" BBC Radio Scotland pundit Craig Paterson

2122: Gary Irvine becomes the first St Johnstone player to be booked after hacking down Stevie Naismith.

2120: If Dougie McDonald hasn't already had some bits going numb from the cold, he will have now after Rangers midfielder Lee McCulloch fires a drive into the referee's midriff.

2118: Rangers goalkeeper Neil Alexander fumbles from a corner, but Stephen Whittaker clears as Saints continue to press and dream of an unlikely late comeback.

2116: Rangers go close to a bizarre third goal when Gary Irvine battered the ball against the legs of John Fleck and the deflection flies 22 yards and wide of the St Johnstone post.

2115: It is end to end stuff now and Rangers defender David Weir has to head clear in front of his own goal after a snap-shot from Jody Morris. Stevie Milne is next to threaten with a 20-yard drive that flies just over.

2114: Stevie Naismith races clear and, as Rangers fans appealed for a shove in his back, he poked the ball across goal and Gary Irvine once more makes a last-ditch clearance before John Fleck can finish.

2112: Okay, that was indeed a good piece of play by young John Fleck, who jinks past three players into the penalty area before having his shot blocked. But surely those defenders should know he is always going to work it on to his left foot.

My Sport
"Kids, that's how not to take a penalty" 23 Years, 6 months and Counting on My Sport

2108: Liam Craig is replaced by Kevin Moon in St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes's final throw of the dice from the bench.

2104: Rangers have another great chance to go 3-0 up when John Fleck is put clear, but the much lauded young striker shows the flaw in his armoury - he only has one foot - and waiting to get in on his left allows the Saints defence to close the space and his shot is deflected.

2103: St Johnstone are still in the tie after former Rangers goalkeeper Graeme Smith denies Stevie Naismith. However, Smith didn't have to move much as it was a poorly struck penalty kick by the Scotland striker.

2102: Penalty to Rangers after Gary Irvine barges into the back of Stevie Naismith.

2059: Former Rangers striker Peter MacDonald comes on for Cillian Sheridan as St Johnstone freshen up their strike force.

2057: St Johnstone end their long wait for another attempt on target with a drive from the edge of the box from Liam Craig, but it does little more than warm the hands of goalkeeper Neil Alexander.

2055: Rangers forward Stevie Naismith almost makes an immediate impact, stealing in front of goalkeeper Graeme Smith to meet a cross to the front post but volleying wide from six yards.

Yellow card
2054: Just before those changes, Rangers midfielder Kevin Thomson became the first player to be booked for a late tackle on Murray Davidson.

2053: Ah, after all that, Nacho Novo and Kyle Lafferty are withdrawn and replaced with Andrew Little and Stevie Naismith in Rangers' attack.

2051: BBC Radio Scotland commentator Richard Gordon has just described Rangers striker Nacho Novo as a Duracell bunny and it seems like it is strike partner Kyle Lafferty who has run out of charge.

2050: Just as I say that, the ball pings about the Rangers penalty area, but for all St Johnstone's pressure, they haven't yet tested goalkeeper Neil Alexander.

2048: Back to the action, although there isn't too much around the goalmouths at the moment, and St Johnstone's Cillian Sheridan goes up to meet a cross but heads well over under pressure. Rangers manager Walter Smith has come down from the stand for the first time, suggesting he might be concerned at the way his side are playing, but there seems little real danger.

2046: The bad news for Saints fans is that the snow seems to be clearing and there seems little prospect of the game being abandoned at this stage. It must one of the few times when Rangers fans welcome seeing a sea of green.

"Saints are up for it and snapping into every challenge, but they need a goal and a bit more guile" BBC Radio Scotland pundit Craig Paterson

My Sport
"If only Rangers had a R. Keane playing for them .... at least there would still be a contest!" mountainview-motel on My Sport

2038: And we're off and Cillian Sheridan's snap shot from 16 yards is well saved by Rangers goalkeeper Neil Alexander as St Johnstone's 4-4-2 formation almost pays immediate dividends.

2036: The guys on BBC Radio Scotland are debating GlasgowJambo1987's point and are suggesting there was no question that Steve Davis's goal should have stood. Not sure who is right, but what I can say for certain is that winger Filipe Morais has been replaced with striker Stevie Milne by Saints at half-time.

My Sport
"Can you get anyone to check the rulebooks for regulations on players being off the field of play. Steven Davis is standing of the field, behind the goal line as he pokes it in, and I have a suspicion it might actually have been illegal for him to play the ball" GlasgowJambo1987 on My Sport

"It's very difficult for the Saints now. Rangers will just sit in and it is going to take something extra special for them to get back into this game" BBC Radio Scotland pundit Craig Paterson

Half time
2021: Rangers 2-0 St Johnstone: Rangers are in command after an entertaining first half during which both teams played some neat football despite the conditions - or maybe it was because of the conditions.

2017: BBC Radio Scotland's trackside man Chick Young reports that referee Dougie McDonald has some concerns about the state of the pitch. It appears that he is indicating to the fourth official that he wants the lines swept at half-time. An abandonment could be St Johnstone's only hope of rescuing this tie.

2015: Cillian Sheridan has a chance to reduce the deficit but heads straight at Rangers goalkeeper Neil Alexander with his header from 10 yards from a Liam Craig corner.

Goooooooaaaaaaaaal
Lee McCulloch puts Rangers in command with a low drive from 22 yards that flies through a forest of legs, including St Johnstone goalkeeper Graeme Smith. It is looking good for the Scottish champions.

2013: GOAL Rangers 2-0 St Johnstone (Lee McCulloch)

2011: What relief for Rangers. Liam Craig's free-kick takes a deflection then defender David Weir almost heads into his own net.

2009: Saints immediately put Rangers under a spell of pressure and a quickly-taken free-kick that allows Filipe Morais a chance to fire in a low drive from 20 yards that goalkeeper Neil Alexander holds at the second attempt on the greasy surface as Cillian Sheridan waits to pounce.

Goooooooaaaaaaaaal
The breakthrough is only delayed a matter of seconds as Nacho Novo breaks into the St Johnstone box and his low cross finds Steve Davis. And, although goalkeeper Graeme Smith blocks the midfielder's initial effort, the Northern Irishman volleys home from a tight angle.

2001: GOAL Rangers 1-0 St Johnstone (Steve Davis)

2000: Rangers midfielder Steve Davis rounds goalkeeper Graeme Smith, but another desperate challenge by Gary Irvine prevents the opener.

"I know it is financially better for Rangers to play a fit player rather than have him sit on the bench but surely an exception could be made in the case of Kyle 'The Comedian' Lafferty. I used to work for Marshalls Chunky Chicks and can honestly say I've seen headless chickens with more direction." Steve in Irvine by text

1959: A quiet spell is ended as Rangers goalkeeper Neil Alexander flaps at a corner, but Filipe Morais' drive from 16 yards hits a defending leg.

1958: We have a bit of a problem with the live video, but it should be there for you now folks!

1952: What a miss! Murray Davidson rises unmarked five yards out to meet a Gary Irvine cross but somehow heads a few yards wide. Let's be kind and say the snow must have been in the midfielder's eyes.

My Sport
"Why wear white? If the snow gets bad, they players won't be able to see each other" Video_killed_the_diving_star on My Sport

1948: St Johnstone defender Gary Irvine has to make a goal-saving back-post clearance to deny Kyle Lafferty after a dangerous cross from Nacho Novo.

1941: Rangers almost take the lead, but what a clearance on the line by Dave Mackay! Nacho Novo beat the offside trap after a Steve Davis through ball, the striker played it through the legs of goalkeeper Graeme Smith and side-footed the ball from the edge of the area only for the Saints defender to slide in and deflect it from goal.

1938: St Johnstone start on the front foot and Rangers goalkeeper Neil Alexander just beats Cillian Sheridan to a long hoof over the heads of the Ibrox side's defence. Jody Morris follows that up with a snap shot that flies well over.

1935: And we're off with a light covering of snow on the pitch. Hopefully it doesn't stop the game finishing.

1932: The snow is falling fast as St Johnstone and Rangers gather in the tunnel. Rangers are in an unfamiliar, all-white change strip. Perhaps they are looking for a camouflage in the wintry conditions. Saints are in their 125th anniversary attire and will be hoping that they are not the second losing semi-finalist in two evenings to lose in maroon.

1928: It looks like Hampden will not even be half full tonight, despite the presence of one of the country's two best supported clubs. It could be less than 20,000, or not much more than that, according to our BBC men on the ground.

Rangers have lost just one cup tie - the Co-operative Insurance Cup final against Celtic last year - since Walter Smith returned for a second spell as manager in January 2007.

Smith's side have gone 12 games without defeat since losing to Sevilla in the Champions League and will be further buoyed by last night's defeat SPL title rivals Celtic.

The headline-grabbing signing of Robbie Keane - on top of seven other imports during January - had looked like it might significantly shift the balance between the Old Firm sides.

But Kilmarnock's surprise 1-0 win leaves Rangers 10 points clear and the cash-strapped club will be anxious to add a Co-operative Insurance Cup final appearance and keep alive their dreams of a domestic Treble.

St Mirren lie in wait for the winners after last night's 1-0 win over Hearts. But will the weight of history lie too heavily on the backs of the boys from Perth attempting to be the second Saints in two nights to go marching into the Co-operative Insurance Cup final?

St Johnstone tonight take on 25-times League Cup winners Rangers at Hampden Park looking to avoid their third defeat of the season against the Glasgow giants.

A 3-0 reverse at Ibrox in December followed a 2-1loss at McDiarmid Park in October to leave Saints with just 13 wins - and 13 draws - in the 101 meetings between the clubs.

But former Rangers midfielder Derek McInnes's side can take heart from their own recent proud cup record.

Despite being a First Division side until this season, this is their fourth major cup semi-final in three seasons and they will be hoping to end their losing streak and reach their first League Cup final since 1998 - their other defeat in a final being in 1969.

The Perth side also won Challenge Cup in 2008, the same year that Rangers last won the League Cup.

And their last win over Rangers came by 2-0 in a League Cup quarter final in November 2006.

They also took the Ibrox men to penalties before losing in a Scottish Cup semi-final two years ago and also put up a decent fight before succumbing to a 2-0 defeat in the same tournament last season.

Now a Scottish Premier League side, they have already accounted for top flight opponents - third-top Hibernian and fourth-placed Dundee United - in this season's competition.

And they go into the game on a high after a weekend league win over Hearts.

"Kenny Deuchar has been feeling a back problem. We have other good strikers and other goalscoring options" St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes explains his change up front

"I think I am right in saying that Neil Alexander has been playing most of the League Cup games and we feel we have two top goalies. Sasa Papac was not feeling 100% fit, but Stevie Smith, when he came on at the weekend, did very very well" Rangers assistant Ally McCoist explains the two changes

1918: Rangers have made two changes, with Stevie Smith replacing Sasa Papac at left-back and Neil Alexander replacing Allan McGregor in goal. Striker Kenny Deuchar has been left on the St Johnstone bench as manager Derek McInnes looks likely to go for a conservative 4-1-4-1 formation with on-loan Celtic striker Cillian Sheridan on his own up front.

1916: Here's how the teams line up - Rangers: Alexander, Whittaker, Weir, Wilson, Smith, Davis, McCulloch, Thomson, Fleck, Novo, Lafferty. Subs: McGregor, Naismith, Broadfoot, Little, Wylde. St Johnstone: Smith, Irvine, MacKay, Gartland, Grainger, Millar, Morris, Davidson, Morais, Sheridan, Craig. Subs: Main, Anderson, Moon, MacDonald, Milne. The referee is Dougie McDonald.
