Third Division Montrose earned a deserved place in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.
Montrose started well, with an overhead kick from Paul Watson crashing back off the cross and player-boss Steven Tweed heading the rebound over.
The home side broke the deadlock in the 57th minute when Watson fired home.
East Fife's Jamie McCunnie hit the crossbar before Paul McManus slammed in the equaliser but John Gemmell bundled in a late winner for Montrose.
