Billy Mehmet struck five goals as St Mirren fended off a fightback from East Stirlingshire to move into the Co-operative Insurance Cup second round.
Mehmet scored one from close range for the SPL side, one from a chip and a third from a header within 17 minutes.
But Stephen McGuire fired a reply before Andy Rodgers curled in another and then equalised from close range.
Mehmet fired another just prior to the break and rolled in his fifth before Stephen O'Donnell slipped in the sixth.
