Terry Venables is the latest name to be linked with the Wales job

The Football Association of Wales have confirmed they are yet to advertise the position of national team manager.

Brian Flynn is in caretaker charge for next month's two Euro 2012 qualifiers after the departure of John Toshack.

Welshmen Ryan Giggs, Tony Pulis and Kenny Jackett have ruled themselves out, while Chris Coleman and John Hartson have been touted.

Ex-England boss Terry Venables has also been linked, but he told BBC Sport Wales it was "pure speculation".

Venables, 67, managed England in the mid-1990s, guiding them to the semi-finals of Euro 96 when they lost to eventual winners Germany on penalties.

The only other non-Welshman to be linked with the job is former Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill, who has been out of work since quitting Villa five days before the Premier League season started.

Wales have been looking for a new manager since Toshack departed by mutual consent after six years in charge, following 1-0 opening Euro 2012 defeat to Montenegro earlier this month.

But Flynn remains the front-runner having stepped up from the Wales youth set-up.

He was appointed by Toshack in 2004 with the brief of supplementing the senior squad with young talent to replace ageing internationals.

Flynn went on to transform a Wales Under-21 side that failed to win a game in 26 attempts between March 1997 and October 2002.

They narrowly missed out on the 2009 European Under-21 Championships - losing to eventual runners-up England in a two-leg play-off.

And despite topping their pool for virtually the whole of the campaign, Wales' Under-21 side narrowly missed out on a play-off place for the 2011 Championships after a 1-0 defeat in Italy.

Flynn has yet to say if he wants the job on a permanent basis.

But following the qualifiers at home to Bulgaria on Friday, 8 October and away to Switzerland four days later, the FAW have five months until the next game to make an appointment.

A spokesman for the FAW said: "We've not actually advertised the position at all as yet, so anybody who is throwing their hat into the ring is doing so very much from their own point of view at the moment."
