Runaway Blue Square South leaders Newport County have signed Torquay United defender Chris Todd on loan for the rest of the season.

Todd's contract at the League Two side runs out at the end of the season and he has agreed in principle to stay at Newport beyond the end of his loan.

Swansea-born Todd, 28, helped Torquay to promotion back to the Football League in May after beating leukaemia.

Manager Dean Holdsworth said: "We are gaining a league quality defender."

Newport are currently 14 points ahead of their nearest rivals at the top of the Blue Square South.
