Welsh football set for Llanelli

Llanelli could host its first Welsh senior football international if Wales' under-21 team successfully host Luxembourg at Parc Y Scarlets in March.

The Football Association of Wales say a senior international will go to the new 23m arena if this experiment in one of Wales' rugby strongholds goes well.

"We are very impressed with the new Parc y Scarlets stadium," said FAW secretary general David Collins.

"If the under-21 game goes well, we'll look to play a senior friendly there."

Wales have hosted international football internationals at Cardiff, Wrexham, Swansea and even Liverpool.

So playing a full international outside Wales' three major footballing centres would be a major break from tradition.

Friendlies at the nearby Liberty Stadium in Swansea have attracted disappointing crowds as just 6,435 watched Wales lose to Georgia in August 2008 and 8,200 saw Wales hold Slovenia to a 0-0 draw in 2005.

And the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff admitted shortcomings over the condition of its pitch during Wales' 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Liechtenstein in October 2008 - a game which attracted just 12,500 supporters.

Parc y Scarlets - home to the Scarlets rugby region and Llanelli rugby team - offer the Welsh FA a fresh venue in south Wales.

Wales' UEFA Under-21 Championship qualifier with Luxembourg on Tuesday, 31 March is the first football game in the traditional rugby stronghold of Llanelli.

"We have never played a Welsh football international at Llanelli," acknowledged FAW chief Collins.

"The Millennium Stadium, The Liberty Stadium, Cardiff City's new stadium and now the Parc y Scarlets means the Welsh football team have tremendous venues to play in.

"While Wrexham's Racecourse Ground is our oldest international home.

"The new stadium at Llanelli gives us another string to our bow and now we hope to establish strong links with the Parc Y Scarlets. "We have done a few ground assessments and it looks to be a fantastic sporting venue, not just for rugby."

606: DEBATE

Parc Y Scarlets has a 14,870 capacity but UEFA rules mean the terraces cannot be used so the capacity will be reduced to approximately 11,000 for football.

The new stadium replaced 129-year-old Stradey Park as Llanelli's rugby ground in November 2008.

While it has taken fewer than five months to play a football game at Llanelli's rugby new home, it took more than 127 years to play the first football game at Stradey Park when Llanelli's football club played a UEFA Cup game against Gefle IF of Sweden in 2006.
