Ken McKenna calls it a day on his terms |
Ken McKenna insists he feels "the time is right" to stand down as manager of The New Saints at the end of the season. "We've had some fantastic times and we've achieved almost everything we can achieve," he told BBC Radio Shropshire.
"In my seven years as manager we've had seven European campaigns and never finished outside the top two in the league.
"I'm leaving with a heavy heart, but with my head held high."
McKenna cited the way the move to the new stadium has failed to stimulate bigger gates as having played a part in his decision, as well as a differing view from the club's managing director Mike Harris on the development of youth players.
"I could have had another contract," he said, "but I feel perhaps I need a new challenge."
Having joined the club as a player 10 years ago, before becoming assistant manager and then eventually taking the top job, McKenna has not made any immediate plans regarding his future.
"I'm not ruling anything out," he said. "I've had a couple of offers from a League club Academy in the past couple of years.
"But I also feel I have a lot to offer any club, in League Two, the Conference, or even back in Wales.
"There's the rest of this season to go, though, and I'm determined to finish my time with The New Saints on a high."
