 | WELSH CUP FINAL |
Rhyl beat Bangor in the Welsh Cup final at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground, helped by a controversial penalty decision. When a cross hit Paul O'Neill's hand, referee Mark Whitby harshly awarded a penalty which Andy Moran converted.
Bangor's Chris Priest was sent-off for his protests to leave his side with a mountain to climb.
Rhyl doubled their lead when Gareth Wilson volleyed home, and a miserable night for Bangor was compounded when Paul Roberts missed a late penalty.
Rhyl, who had already qualified for the Intertoto Cup next season by finishing fourth in the Welsh Premier, will now enter the Uefa Cup.
Fourth-place Carmarthen Town will take the Intertoto Cup spot and will play Finland's Tampere United.
Bangor player-manager Clayton Blackmore:
"I didn't think we played well on the day and I've not seen the penalty again, but a lot of people say it was ball to hand.
"And then to have a player sent off was a double-whammy for us.
"I think we played better with 10 men, but we were always going to be wide open from then on."
Rhyl manager John Hulse:
"We could have been 2-0 up at half-time, but to be fair to them when they went a man down early in the second half they made a good spirited game of it when they might possibly of caved in.
"I thought we missed a couple of decent chances after the break as well, but a 2-0 win was very pleasing in the end.
"It was definitely a penalty, but I didn't see why the lad was sent off. If something like that happens, it's normally for swearing at the referee."
