Steve Walters gave Rhyl a two goal cushion |
Rhyl stunned Third Division Swansea City to set up an FAW Premier Cup final against neighbours Wrexham. The Welsh Premier leaders did all the damage in a devastating two-minute period just before half time.
Swansea defender Alan Tate scored the first when he deflected Chris Adamson's powerful shot into this own net.
Steve Walters added the second when his low drive found its way through a crowded penalty area after Tim Edwards' header had been cleared off the line.
The home side adapted quickest to the difficult bumpy pitch and created two decent openings for top scorer Andy Moran in the opening 15 minutes.
Both were saved quite comfortably by Swansea goalkeeper Roger Freestone, but the visitors quickly realised they had a battle on their hands.
Rhyl's three man defence gave them an extra man in midfield, and that ensured Swansea's central midfield pair of Roberto Martinez and Jonathan Coates had little time to settle on the ball.
There was space down the flanks, though, and a long ball over the top put Stuart Roberts away on the left to threaten Rhyl goalkeeper Paul Smith for the first time.
Roberts headed the ball neatly into own his path, but his low drive just outside of the penalty area went inches past the far post.
The Welsh Premier side were still enjoying the better of the possession, but no-one could have predicted the devastating two minutes that soon followed. Trickery from Mark Limbert down the right won Rhyl a free-kick in a dangerous position out wide, and his delivery caused problems in the Swansea box.
Tate made a fine block after the ball fell at the feet of Walters, but the tall defender could then only head the ball into his own goal from Adamson's shot from the edge of the box.
And just when the home fans were settling down from their celebrations, along came the second goal.
A corner from the right this time caused the problems as Rhyl defender Edwards saw his header cleared off the line by Leon Hylton.
But Walters was again first to the loose ball and his low drive found its way through the crowd into the net.
New Swansea manager Kenny Jackett would have demanded better from his side during his half-time team talk, but their rather lethargic and directionless play continued in the second half.
And it was Rhyl who looked the more likely to score when two ball over the Swansea defence almost sent Moran away around the hour mark.
The man of the match could have scored at least one more before the end. He first had a header cleared off the line and then saw another header fly inches over the bar.
Swansea failed to force a single save from Smith and will have no complaints over the outcome after being thoroughly outplayed by supposedly weaker opposition.
