Holders Wrexham made the final of the FAW Premier Cup with a penalties win over Cardiff at the Racecourse.

The game stood at 2-2 after extra time, the home side having twice come from behind in the opening 90 minutes.

Alan Lee scored first, Chris Llewellyn equalised, Andy Campbell got the Bluebirds to 2-1, but Chris Armstrong equalised in the 89th minute.

After 12 successful penalties Tony Vidmar missed one and Stephen Roberts fired in the decisive strike.

Wrexham will face the winners of the Rhyl v Swansea semi-final to be played on 7 April.

Lee opened the scoring in the 34th minute after latching onto an excellent through ball from half-way by Gareth Whalley.

The striker controlled with his chest before beating Wrexham keeper Mike Ingham with a delightful lob.

Lee came close to adding a second three minutes after the break with another lob, but this time the shot beat the bar as well as Ingham.

The game seemed to be slipping away from the home side, but Llewellyn woke them up with a fine effort that was blocked by City defender Vidmar.

The front man was not to be denied in the 74th minute as Steve Thomas floated a free kick into the box, won superbly by Dennis Lawrence.

The big defender also bowled over City keeper Neil Alexander, but play was allowed to continue and Llewellyn reacted first to fire in from five yards.

With the tide apparently flowing the Dragons' way, Campbell popped up to swing it back towards the south Wales side.

Gavin Gordon won a header from a long ball on the edge of the area, and the ball fell to Campbell who fired in a superb right-footed half-volley.

With just two minutes to go, Wrexham substitute Lee Jones hit a fine effort just over the bar.

But from the next move Jones delivered a teasing cross after a run down the right wing, Alexander flapped at the ball and Armstrong drove in the goal to send the game to extra time.

Carlos Edwards enjoyed a string of chances in added time as the Dragons' resurgence told, but he failed to find the target.

Cardiff failed to capitalise on Wrexham's reduction to 10 men for the last 15 minutes when Chris Llewellyn limped off, and the game headed inevitably towards a penalty shoot-out.

It seemed that neither side would miss as 12 perfect spot kicks were fired past the keepers.

But a nervous Vidmar effort went straight to Ingham, and man-of-the-match Roberts made no mistake with the decisive strike.
