Sheff Wed 1 - 0 Bury

Sheffield Wednesday edged past League Two side Bury to reach the second round of the Carling Cup.

Bury had the better first-half chances as Andy Howarth's half-volley clipped the bar, and Andy Bishop continued to test the Wednesday defence.

The arrival of Clinton Morrison and Giles Coke as second-half substitutes lifted the home side and Coke's left-footed drill broke the deadlock.

Bury pressed on but Wednesday clung to their slim advantage.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Alan Irvine told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"We were very disappointing for large parts of the game.

"They're very unfortunate to be out of the cup.

"You need players to make the right decisions and we didn't do that.
