Goals from Scott Dobie and Gary Madine saw Carlisle overcome Championship side Bristol City in the Carling Cup.
The League One side enjoyed the best chance of a goalless first half but on-loan Tom Taiwo hit the post.
Dobie broke the deadlock just after the hour, slipping the ball past Dean Gerken from close range.
Madine saw Carlisle into the third round for the first time in 34 years, finishing coolly from an unselfish pass by midfielder Joe Anyinsah.
Bristol City assistant manager Keith Millen told BBC Radio Bristol:
"I think it's the longest inquest we've had. We've told the players what we thought of them and the performance."
"I'm not sure whether they thought they've cracked it but they're certainly not playing well enough to represent this football club."
"I can't think of a worse performance than that. We've got some difficult decisions to make for the game against Middlesbrough."
