A second-half brace from Lee Barnard took League One Southend through to the second round of the Carling Cup at the expense of League Two Cheltenham.
The home side opened the scoring when Elvis Hammond bundled the ball home following an Andy Gallinagh shot.
Southend levelled when Matt Heath headed Simon Francis' cross back across goal and Barnard stooped to head in.
With two minutes to go Francis crossed for Barnard to nod home at the far post and send the Shrimpers through.
Cheltenham boss Martin Allen told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:
"I thought our second-half performance was much better and we need those performances for 90 minutes on a regular basis, that's what I'm looking for.
"To concede two goals was a big blow and it is disappointing for us to go out because it was a chance for us to make some money."
Southend boss Steve Tilson told BBC Essex:
"We could have been four or five up in the first 35 minutes but once we got the first goal they had to come out and play.
"It's a fantastic result for us."
