Carling Cup holders Tottenham have been handed a tough draw away to Newcastle in the third round.

Last season's runners-up Chelsea travel to FA Cup winners Portsmouth, while Manchester United face an all-Premier League tie with Middlesbrough.

League Two side Rotherham are at home to Southampton, while Swansea will face Welsh rivals Cardiff.

Liverpool meet Crewe and Arsenal play Sheffield United, with ties to be held in the week commencing 22 September.

Tottenham face a difficult task if they are to repeat their triumph in the competition, with their tie being one of four all-Premier League ties.

Spurs, who beat Chelsea 2-1 in the final at Wembley, have lost their last five games against Newcastle.
