Anthony Elding and Byron Moore scored the goals that took League One's Crewe into the Carling Cup third round at the expense of Championship Bristol City.
Elding opened the scoring when a well-worked one-two with Tom Pope left him with just keeper Chris Weale to beat and he curled the ball in sweetly.
After the break, Moore raced on to Joel Grant's through-ball to slot home and double the hosts' advantage.
Brian Wilson's 25-yard screamer pulled one back for City but Crewe held on.
Crewe boss Steve Holland: "We deserved to go through and the players are all excited about being in the pot with the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool.
"Our centre-backs were immaculate and deserve credit for keeping quality forwards like Nicky and Dele Adebola quiet.
"We created the best three or four chances of the game and gave a performance that included effort, concentration, quality and thought."
Bristol City boss Gary Johnson: "We only played for 10 minutes and they outplayed us for 80 so they deserve to go through," he said.
"Maybe we should have made some changes from Saturday because the effort wasn't there tonight. We showed no quality.
"Our crosses into the box and our finishing were both poor and so Crewe deserve their victory."
