Shaun MacDonald impressed with a brace for the Swans
Shaun MacDonald struck in each half as Swansea City eased past 10-man Brentford in their first-round Carling Cup match at the Liberty Stadium.
The 20-year-old midfielder first netted after 31 minutes, converting Febian Brandy's cross at the back post.
MacDonald added his second goal of the night with 21 minutes remaining, producing a neat left-footed strike from the edge of the penalty area.
Brentford defender Marcus Bean was sent off late on for two bookable offences.
The only minus point for Swansea was a rib injury to Fede Bessone that ended the defender's night on 60 minutes and saw him sent to hospital for a precautionary X-ray.
Swansea manager Roberto Martinez: "Shaun (MacDonald) showed great quality with his finishing and he can only get better as he's still young and learning.
"He has all the attributes to be a great player at a high level.
"He needs to continue working hard and he will continue to get the rewards."
Brentford manager Andy Scott: "We were beaten by a strong team but we can take heart out of our display.
"We defended well and never gave up. I thought we created some problems in attack and on another night we could have scored.
"Losing Marcus Bean was the most disappointing aspect of the night. We have eight players injured and one suspended so it's not a clever situation with 21 players to choose from."
