A Peter Murphy free-kick was enough to put Carlisle into the second round of the Carling Cup after a hard-fought win over Shrewsbury.
Murphy struck from the left-hand corner of the penalty area after 41 minutes to secure the win.
United were forced to defend for long spells with the Shrews enjoying the better of the second half.
Keeper Ben Williams was at full stretch to keep out a shot from Ben Davies, who also hit the bar with 10 minutes left.
