Hartlepool produced a fine display to knock Nigel Adkins' side out in the first round of the Carling Cup for the second successive season.
Two goals in seven second half minutes put Hartlepool in command, Joel Porter glancing in a close-range header for the first on 51 minutes.
David Foley then made it two from close range after Porter's impressive run.
James Brown got the third after 76 minutes, firing in from the edge of the area after good work from Gary Liddle.
