Lee Bradbury's hat-trick put Southend in the Carling Cup second round as United scored three extra-time goals. Southend took an early lead in the 11th minute thanks to a Bradbury header but Cheltenham scored a deserved equaliser when John Finnigan fired home.
Finnigan had an injury-time penalty in normal time saved, a miss that came back to haunt the Cheltenham skipper.
Adam Barrett restored Southend's lead and then Bradbury took over, scoring with a penalty and an unstoppable shot.
