Leon Constantine scored the winner as League One Port Vale beat Championship side Preston in the Carling Cup. Vale keeper Mark Goodlad twice saved from Chris Sedgwick and Jason Jarrett missed while Preston's Liam Chilvers cleared off the line from Jeff Smith.
Akpo Sodje headed Vale in front and David Nugent missed a good chance to equalise before Simon Whaley did so with a low strike from 18 yards.
But Constantine struck the winner after collecting a pass from Sodje.
