IFA impose initial penalties on brawling Newry & Larne

Newry and Larne are handed initial sanctions following the Irish Cup disturbances but more penalties could yet follow

The IFA Disciplinary Committee has handed out punishments to Larne and Newry City following the abandonment of their JJB Irish Cup tie on 16 January.

Larne were fined £1,200, with Anthony Lagan banned until 31 May and Robert White and Brian Neeson both suspended for two games and fined £75 each.

Paul Millar got a four-game ban and Newry were fined £800 and Cullen Feeney was banned for two games and fined £75.

The IFA has still to decide if either team should play in the sixth round.

An IFA commission is scheduled to make a decision on that issue next week.

In terms of Thursday night's hearing, the IFA has confirmed that no photographic evidence from the controversial match was viewed by the disciplinary committee.

Photographs from the match included a picture of Larne player Lagan appearing to aim a kick at Feeney's head during the disturbances.

Lagan's ban will rule him out of action for the remainder of the season.

The match was halted 10 minutes from time after a brawl involving players and coaches from both clubs.

"Both clubs have been warned regarding their future conduct. The incidents have been considered both extremely serious and totally unacceptable which led to the abandonment of the match," said an IFA statement.

The two clubs have a right of appeal to the IFA Appeals Board and Newry chairman Paul McKenna has already said that his outfit will seek to have their £800 fine overturned.

McKenna was scathing about the IFA's verdict, insisting that Larne players had been overwhelmingly responsible for the violence.

"The actions taken by (certain Larne) player on that day, if that happened on the streets you'd be talking about GBH and people going to jail," added the Newry official.

"The IFA had a chance to lay down the law and to make an example.

"They didn't. They missed the boat on that. They bottled it or whatever way you want to call it."
