Portadown are still chasing their first league win of the season after playing out a scoreless draw at Newry.
City goalkeeper Andy Coleman twice denied Kevin Braniff early in the first half and at the other end Alan Davidson volleyed just over from 20 yards.
In the second half, Chris Morgan saw his 18-yard shot tipped over the bar by David Miskelly and Steven Ferguson saw his shot pushed past by Miskelly.
Newry lie fourth after a promising start while Portadown are in 10th spot.
In the third minute, Braniff's left-foot shot was deflected off Gavin McDonnell and Coleman scrambled back to tip the ball round the post.
Coleman then saved Braniff's attempt from a tight angle and then Davidson was unable to convert his opportunity.
Morgan was foiled by Miskelly after latching onto a long ball which deceived the Ports defence.
