It was a match of mixed fortunes for David Cushley as United won this JJB Sports Premiership Section B game.
Cushley fired in the only goal from 20 yards after 58 minutes but he was sent-off five minutes from time after picking up a second booking.
Institute had the better chances in the first half with Sean Friars, Philip Lowry and Kevin Ramsey going close.
Institute's David Ogilby was dismissed for two yellows on 88 minutes as United held on to win a poor encounter.
