Mark Farren goes round keeper Steve Williams to score for Derry
Mark Farren's eighth-minute goal proved enough to get Derry City off to a winning start in the 2009 Eircom League at the Brandywell on Friday night.
After Sammy Morrow's through ball, Farren went on to round Drogheda keeper Steve Williams and score.
Barry Molloy and Farren missed chances to extend the lead before half-time.
Former Linfield striker Thomas Stewart forced a save from Williams and from the corner Stephen Gray headed into the arms of the grateful keeper.
Last season's runaway champions Bohemians won 1-0 at Dundalk thanks to a goal from Joseph Ndo.
Galway United were 3-0 winners at St Patrick's Athletic and Michael O'Neill's first match in charge of Shamrock Rovers ended in a 0-0 draw away to Bray Wanderers.
