Linfield striker Glenn Ferguson should be back in action within the next three weeks after fears that he had suffered a serious knee injury were allayed.

Ferguson was carried off in Linfield's Boxing Day win over Glentoran.

But scans have revealed that the 39-year-old striker merely suffered bruising to his shinbone as well as minor cartilage damage.

"The news is much better than I was expecting," Ferguson told BBC Sport on Tuesday morning.

"Our physio Terry Hayes phoned me it was a great relief to get the news."

Ferguson had expressed fears that his glittering Irish League career could have been ended by the injury.

The former Northern Ireland striker was carried off during the 3-0 win over Glentoran in which he scored twice.

"I am just delighted that there is no long-term damage.

"It's the best verdict it could have been and I'll be looking forward to getting back to action within two to three weeks."

Ferguson underwent a scan at the Ulster Clinic on Monday and faced a nervous wait before being informed of the verdict by Blues physio Hayes on Tuesday morning.
