Derry's Kevin Deery challenges Killian Brennan of Bohemians
Derry City suffered penalty shoot-out heartbreak in the FAI Ford Cup final as champions Bohemians completed the double at the RDS on Sunday.
The match ended 2-2 after extra-time and Pat Fenlon's Dublin side lifted the trophy 4-2 on penalties.
All the goals came in the second half of normal time with Sammy Morrow putting City ahead with a free-kick and Glen Crowe equalising.
A Jason Byrne penalty edged Bohs ahead before Morrow grabbed his second goal.
Derry had made the brighter start and had a good penalty claim turned down in the fourth minute.
Morrow was nudged off the ball by Owen Heary but referee Anthony Buttimer did not see it as a clear foul.
Bohemians keeper Brian Murphy then saved after Morrow flicked on a free-kick.
The closest to a goal in the first half came in the 22nd minute when Bohs got a free right on the edge of the penalty area and former Derry star Killian Brennan's shot struck the bar.
At the other end, City striker Mark Farren saw a header athletically tipped over by Murphy after Gareth McGlynn had crossed from the right.
The came really sprang to life when Derry made the breakthrough in the 60th minute.
Farren was fouled in a central position on the edge of the penalty area and Morrow blasted the free-kick through the Bohs wall and into the net.
But the lead lasted just four minutes as Crowe pounced for the equaliser.
The former Republic of Ireland international netted from close in after Derry failed to clear a corner and the ball came off the near post into Crowe's path.
Bohemians then took the lead thanks to a fortunate penalty award in the 70th minute.
The ball bounced up and struck Morrow on the hand and, although it did not look like an intentional offence, the spot-kick was given and Byrne drilled it past Gerard Doherty.
Back came Derry this time and again Morrow was at the centre of things. The former Hibs man stretched to poke in with his right foot following Niall McGinn's ball to the far post on 75 minutes.
In extra-time Gerard Doherty made a fine save from Lithuanian international Mindaugas Kalonas and in the final minute Murphy saved brilliantly to deny McGinn.
In the shoot-out Murphy saved from Kevin Deery and Ruairi Higgins while Mark Rossiter was the only Bohemians player to fail from the spot.
