Niall McGinn struck Derry's second goal in the 62nd minute
Derry City ensured that they will finish no lower than third in the Eircom Premier League by beating Galway United on Sunday night.
Gareth McGlynn put Derry ahead in the 10th minute with an overhead kick after Kevin Deery's initial shot had been parried by keeper Gary Rogers.
The impressive Niall McGinn headed Derry's second goal on 62 minutes.
Galway were awarded a penalty but Derry goalkeeper Gerard Doherty saved Jay O'Shea's effort.
Derry move to within three points of second-placed St Patrick's Athletic although Pat's have a game in hand.
Stephen Kenny's side have two remaining League games against Shamrock Rovers and Cobh Ramblers (7 and 14 November).
The Candystripes' final match of the season will the FAI Ford Cup final on 23 November when they will be attempting to prevent Bohemians from completing a League and Cup double.
