Former UCD striker Conor Sammon was Derry City's matchwinner in Friday's clash against Eircom League Premier Division champions Drogheda United.
Sammon struck in the 83rd minute after Niall McGinn set up the chance with a good run from his own half.
Derry suffered a blow in the first half when midfielder Gareth McGlynn was carried off with a knee injury.
The win takes City to within two points of second-placed St Pat's and they are four behind leaders Bohemians.
In the first half Drogheda went close when Guy Bates shot just over the bar.
In the second Ollice Cahill saw a shot clawed away by Derry goalkeeper Gerard Doherty.
