Steven Carson is one of Coleraine's key players

Steven Carson has ended speculation about his future by signing a three-year deal to remain at Coleraine.

New manager David Platt says securing Carson's future with the club is a key building block in his future plans.

Striker David Patton, goalkeeper Laurence McCormick and exciting teenage prospects Alan Ewart and Adam McCart have also signed new deals.

However defender Stewart Clanachan, Sean Heneghan, Gordon Patton and Damien Whitehead have all been released.

"Stephen (Carson) is a quality player who adds a special dimension to the team and I applaud him for sticking with Coleraine," said the Coleraine manager.

The former Rangers and Dundee United winger was Coleraine's top scorer last season and says it was always his intention to stay with the Bannsiders.

"I had a few non-football issues to sort out before I could sign, but in terms of football, the decision was always to remain," he said.

"I want to win something at the club and I think with a few additions and a professional attitude we can be up there challenging."

Meanwhile, former Glenavon striker Geoff Ferris is Platt's new assistant.

Ferris, who also played with Carrick Rangers and Coleraine, scored for the Lurgan Blues in their cup final victory over Linfield in 1992.

He had been manager of Tobermore United for several years until the beginning of last season.

Platt said "I'm delighted to have Geoff on my team. He is a Coleraine fan and is excited about coming on board."
