Peter Thompson and Stephen Douglas celebrate Linfield's win |
Linfield secured a place in the CIS Cup decider after beating Newry 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shoot-out in Wednesday night's semi-final at Mourneview Park. Blues striker Peter Thompson headed against the bar before Darren King put Newry ahead with a crisp finish a minute after the break.
Thompson made it 1-1 on 74 minutes to take the game into extra-time.
Stephen Douglas scored the winning penalty to set up a meeting with Crusaders in the 8 December final.
Newry midfielder Sean Friars forced Alan Mannus into a near-post save before Thompson found the woodwork from an Aidan O'Kane corner.
The opener came seconds after the restart when Kevin Keegan provided the pass for Kelly, who hit a low shot into the corner of the Linfield net.
Thompson's finish from 10 yards set up a tense finish and City keeper Robert Robinson made great saves from Thompson and Michael Gault.
Extra-time failed to separate the sides so it all came down to penalties.

Glenn Ferguson, Thompson and Mark Dickson scored for the Blues but former Newry player Damien Curran had his spot-kick saved by Robinson. Emmett Friars, Joe McDonnell and Richard Clarke netted for City but Paddy McLaughlin hit the bar and Mannus saved Lee Feeney's effort.
So, with it level at 3-3 after nine penalties, Douglas had the chance to win it for Linfield and the defender duly obliged.
