Richard Gibson faces a long lay-off after breaking a leg |
Glenavon striker Richard Gibson could be out for the rest of the season after breaking a leg in Friday night's 4-1 league victory over Dungannon Swifts. Gibson suffered the injury in a challenge soon after scoring a 10th minute opener at Stangmore Park.
Eamon Murray, Paul Carville and Colm Kearney were also on target for the visitors before Paul Barron netted a consolation goal for the Swifts.
Dungannon's Ryan McCluskey was sent off late on for two yellow cards.
Gibson sustained a clean break but was able to limp off the field despite the seriousness of the injury.
He was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast and is expected to spend six to eight weeks in plaster.
"Richard had just scored with a great free-kick and the injury has marred a wonderful result," said Lurgan Blues boss Colin Malone.
The Swifts remain without a Carnegie Irish League point after this thumping.
Glenavon's opening goal came after Lewis Hamlin had been fouled on the edge of the box by John Curran with Gibson curling his free-kick round the wall.
Gibson soon had to depart the fray because of the injury and he was replaced by Kearney.
Glenavon were 2-0 up on 23 minutes when Murray lashed the ball home from the edge of the box after his team had broken quickly out of their own defence.
Carville hit Glenavon's third with a 47th-minute free-kick and Colm Kearney headed the fourth on 63 after a Carville cross.
Baron's 70th-minute reply was little consolation for Dungannon.
McCluskey was given his marching orders in stoppage time after picking up his second yellow card following a rash tackle on Carville.
Dungannon could have taken the lead early on but Shea Campbell's initial shot was blocked by Paul Rice and the Swifts striker's rebound was then headed off the line by Barry Meehan.
