Pat McCourt gets away from Pyunik's Rafael Nazaryan |
Derry missed a string of chances as they were held by the Armenian visitors in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier at the Brandywell. Pat McCourt went close in the opening minutes when he beat two defenders before having his shot tipped over.
Ciaran Martyn should have scored after the break but he tamely side-footed wide after good work from the impressive McCourt.
The return leg will take place in Yerevan next Wednesday.
"We created enough chances to win the game and I'm disappointed as we should have won the game," said Derry boss John Roberston.
"But in Europe it's important not to concede a home goal - if we nick a goal over there, which we are capable off, then we've got a really good chance.
"They are a good side but we are still in there and we are still fighting."
