Anders Svensson is challenged by Linfield's Michael Gault |
Linfield produced a stirring second half display but had to settle for a 0-0 draw against Elfsborg in the first leg of their Champions League tie. The Swedish champions could have been at least two up at half-time but for superb saves from Alan Mannus.
Fredrik Berglund was guilty of a bad miss, shooting wide from 10 yards.
Linfield had a fine spell after the break and Jamie Mulgrew looked set to give them the lead but his back-post header was saved.
David Jeffrey, manager of the Irish League champions, should be well satisfied with this outcome against the Swedish League leaders who are midway through their campaign.
Linfield, with just two pre-season friendlies behind them, looked a bit ring-rusty in the early stages and a clean sheet appeared a tall order
But in the second half, with Paul McAreavey starting to call the shots, they began to pose problems for Elfsborg.
Veteran striker Glenn Ferguson was a late substitute for Linfield who received a deserved standing ovation from their supporters on the final whistle.
The second leg will be played on Wednesday 25 July.
