A first half goal by Aidan O'Kane gave Linfield a 1-0 win over Drogheda United in their opening Setanta Cup fixture. On 29 minutes O'Kane won a header from a Stephen Douglas cross and fired home with a looping left foot shot.
Ollie Cahill was wide with an early attempt and Aidan O'Keefe saw his left foot shot go just wide of the post.
In the second half Cahill volleyed over the bar and shot wide, Alan Mannus twice saved well from Declan O'Brien and defender Jason Gavin headed over.
The home side lost Shane Barrett in the fourth minute as he was carried off after sustaining a leg injury.
Mannus excelled by tipping an O'Brien chip over the bar on 69 minutes after which Graham Gartland had an effort ruled out for offside.
With ten minutes remaining, Mannus made a point blank save from striker O'Brien and the Blues held on to take a crucial victory.
