Kenny salutes his Derry heroes
Derry City manager Stephen Kenny
Stephen Kenny's side were second in last year's Eircom League
Manager Stephen Kenny has hailed Derry City's Uefa Cup first leg win over IFK Gothenburg as one of the greatest nights in the club's history.

The Eircom League side pulled off a memorable 1-0 win in Sweden thanks to a goal from Sean Hargan.

"We know no Irish team has knocked out a side of Gothenburg's pedigree so this result speaks volumes for the work the players have put in," said Kenny.

"But it is only half-time in the tie. It could be harder at the Brandywell."

The second leg takes place in Derry on 27 July.

"Gothenburg will not underestimate us now," added the Candystripes boss.

"They have won the Uefa Cup twice and only a few years ago were in the group stages of the Champions League so this is a great night for everyone connected with Derry City.

"We were worthy winners. It is not as if we got a goal and held on. I think we played the better football.

"Gothenburg are direct and powerful and can really hurt you. We were concerned about their set-pieces but we actually scored and put them under a lot of pressure.

"It was a great night for a club which represents its city well."
