Billy Woods celebrates his Champions League goal for Cork |
A superb goal by Billy Woods was enough to give Cork City a first-leg lead over Apollon Limassol in their opening Champions League qualifying round game. Woods took a pass from Joe Gamble on 62 minutes before finding room on the edge of the box to fire home.
The lead almost disappeared 20 minutes later when Apollon skipper Lukasz Sosin hit a post with a low free-kick which bounced over Mick Devine's hands.
The second leg in Cyprus will be played on Wednesday 19 July.
Cork boss Damien Richardson knows his side's slender lead will come under severe pressure in Limassol.
"The one goal was enough on the night and it is enough for me," said boss Richardson.
"The important thing is we did not concede the away goal.
"In the first half we found it difficult to break through their system and they caused us problems on the break.
"In the second we pulled them wide and got a goal from it."
Red Star Belgrade await the winners of the match.
