Timmy Adamson celebrates his first half goal for Dungannon |
Timmy Adamson's 29th minute goal was enough to earn Dungannon victory in Wednesday's Nationwide Irish Cup replay against Cliftonville. Nathan McConnell and Chris Scannell had chances for Cliftonville but Dungannon were the more creative side.
McConnell's bad night was completed when he was sent off late in the game after tangling with JP Gallagher.
David Scullion and Michael Ward missed half-chances for the Swifts who will be at home to Portadown in the last 16.
Scannell had the first chance of the game in the 20th minute with an overhead kick which was eventually gathered by Gavin Cushley after the Dungannon goalkeeper had flapped at a Sean Friars free-kick.
However, Dungannon took the lead nine minutes later when Adamson powered a header home from six yards after a Rodney McAree corner.
McConnell's chance came in the 35th minute but he failed to get a good connection on his header.
Scullion had half-chances for Dungannon in the 64th and 76th minutes but he fired over on both occasions while Ward also missed the target when well-placed for the home side.
McConnell's sending off came six minutes from time after his tangle with Gallagher.
Dungannon's win earns them a home tie against cup holders Portadown in the sixth round.
