Paul Leeman pips team-mate Mark Glendinning to title |
Glentoran captain Paul Leeman has been named Ulster footballer of the year by an independent panel of local football experts. Leeman's team-mate Mark Glendinning was runner-up with Portadown's midfield tyro Michael Collins in third.
Leeman was the unanimous choice of the Castlereagh Glentoran Supporters' Club and was surprised at the honour.
"A bit shocked, as there have been some great performances this season. It's a great honour for me," said Leeman.
"There have been a lot of good goal-scorers in the league this season.
"From our team, Chris Morgan and Michael Halliday have been excellent while young Thompson at Linfield has been in great form.
"So really it's great to win the award in front of players like that."
Leeman, who has only missed three of the Glentoran's 64 games this season, took over the captain's role from colleague Chris Walker and has not looked back.
"One of my ambitions was to lead Glentoran, and I managed to achieve that in the last couple of seasons.
"It does bring its added pressure, but it's pressure that I enjoy. Leading the team is good and I hope to continue for a few years yet."
