Liam Beckett resigned as Cliftonville manager in July |
Former Cliftonville boss Liam Beckett is to have talks with Newry City about their managerial vacancy. Newry dismissed reports that Beckett had already been interviewed but said there was a shortlist and an appointment would be made soon.
"When stories appeared about me going to Newry I said the travelling distance would be just too much," said Beckett.
"But in hindsight, maybe something could be worked out so I have arranged to meet their chairman Bernie Keenan."
Dublin City manager Dermot Keely is believed to be another contender to succeed Roy McCreadie.
"We had 15 applications for the position from north and south of the border," said Newry director Alan Williams.
"There is now a shortlist and we should make an appointment within the week."
Williams said the club wanted to find a place for Raymond Byrne who has been caretaker since McCreadie's departure.
"He has done a good job along with coach Paul Millar but Raymond himself would admit he needs more experience.
"However, we would like to see him in a long-term position with Newry City," added Williams.
