Darren Lockhart scored four for Glentoran against Glebe Rangers |
Glentoran went on the rampage on Monday evening by hammering junior club Glebe Rangers 11-0 in the County Antrim Shield. The Ballymoney minnows were out of their depth at the Oval as the Irish Cup holders went on a scoring spree.
Darren Lockhart and Michael Halliday each scored four for the Glens who netted five in the first half and six after the interval.
Damien McLaughlin (2) and Shaun Holmes got the other Glentoran goals.
It was the Glens' biggest winning margin since their 15-1 Irish League victory over Oldpark in 1891 although they also claimed a 11-0 win over Oxford United Stars in the Irish Cup in 2003.
Glebe, who qualified for the Shield by reaching the Steel Cup quarter-finals, could have lost by even more had it not been for some fine saves from keeper Laurence McCormack.
Turned provider
The Ballymena Intermediate League side were behind after just 36 seconds when McLaughlin took a Timothy McCann pass and shot in from the edge of the penalty box.
Lockhart headed in from a Holmes cross on two minutes and then turned provider for Halliday to shoot number three into the roof of the net.
Former Crusaders midfielder Lockhart scored again with an unmarked header from a Holmes free and completed his hat-trick just before half-time, lifting a shot over McCormack.
Lockhart's fourth made it 6-0 a minute into the second half with Holmes getting on the scoresheet three minutes later.
McLaughlin's close-range header from a Kevin Keegan cross made it 8-0 to the senior side on 50 minutes.
Halliday scored the last three for the rampant Glens on 53, 63 and 85 minutes.
