Central defender Gary Smyth is being let go by Glentoran |
Glentoran defender Gary Smyth is to leave the club after failing to get a new contract at the Oval. The news comes just over a year after Smyth was named the Irish League's player of the year in Glentoran's championship-winning season.
"It is a bit of a shock. I had hoped to finish my career with the Glens but it is not to be," said the 34-year-old.
"The manager Roy Coyle told me it was because of my age. He said he was planning for the long term."
Smyth made his Glens debut in February 1990 and moved to Glenavon in 1995 before returning to the Oval in 2000. He twice came back from serious knee injuries.
Although a lanky central defender, Smyth was also known for his accuracy and danger from direct free-kicks.
Smyth said he would like to have several options before deciding where to play next season.
In the early stages of the last campaign, Smyth was unwittingly at the centre of an administration row when Glentoran were docked points for failing to register him properly with the Irish FA.
Glentoran are understood to be keen to sign former Manchester United defender Pat McGibbon from Portadown as a replacement for Smyth.
The Ports, meanwhile, have completed the signing of ex-Oldham Athletic keeper David Miskelly.
