Robert Casey scored Newry's second goal at St Julian's Road |
A dramatic injury-time penalty by Tony Shields gave Omagh Town their first Daily Mirror Irish Premier League point of the season. Newry looked to be heading for an easy victory at St Julian's Road when Damien Curran and Robert Casey gave them a 2-0 interval lead.
However, Omagh came out fighting in the second half with Trevor Scanlon pulling a goal back.
It was then left to Shields knock home the equaliser from the spot.
It was a different story in the first half with Austin Friel almost putting Newry ahead in the fifth minute but his shot rebounded clear off the bar.
Newry had the Omagh defence in a panic again a few minutes later but the ball was hacked clear after a goalmouth scramble.
But it was only a matter of time before Newry took the lead and they did with aplomb with a candidate for the goal of the season.
Curran picked up the ball in the 21st minute and volleyed home a rocket from 30 yards with the ball crashing in after it cannoned off the cross-bar.
Newry went two-up in 31st minute when Casey nodded home at the back post from a Curran free-kick.
Omagh battled hard in the second half and pulled a goal back in the 68th minute with Scanlon scoring his first goal for the club with a 30-yard rocket.
Omagh's comeback was complete as the game drifted into injury time when Friel handled in the area and Shields did the needful from the spot.
