The Dubliners created the better openings but some stubborn defending and good goalkeepering from Alan Gough frustrated Shels.

With Drogheda claiming a 2-0 win in Waterford on Friday night, Derry are now one point behind the Louth side on 27 points although the northerners have a game in hand.

Shelbourne's Stuart Byrne came closest to scoring in the opening half.

On 16 minutes, he was just wide with a long-range effort and six minutes before the break, he headed over the top after a knock-down by Jason Byrne.

Derry's best chance of the match was a Sean Friars header 11 minutes after the break which went just wide.

The home team had a lucky escape on the hour when Jason Byrne's lob was inches over the top with Gough beaten.

Gough made a tremendous save 10 minutes from time when he stopped a powerful Jason Byrne free-kick.
