"It came from a long way and had a hell of a lot of spin on it that put me on the wrong foot," said Jones.

"I had to check, and it had too much on it for me to keep out.

"It's disappointing to let in any goal, especially one from long range. I'll just have to look at the video and see what I could have done better."

Jones' team-mates were keen to rally round their under-fire keeper.

"The shot was from a long way out but I was right behind it and saw it move in air," said Wales captain Gary Speed.

"It's just one of those things that happens in football."

Wales striker John Hartson praised Jones for the way he reacted to the mistake.

"Paul has held his hand up and admitted his fault which is very brave, but we don't blame individuals in this team," Hartson told BBC Sport Wales.

The Wolverhampton keeper was determined to take the positives out of the Baku result and said that the team are determined to put things right against Northern Ireland in Cardiff on Wednesday.

"We had wanted three points against Azerbaijan but it wasn't a good performance so we'll take the one," said Jones.

"We improved in the second half, but after they scored they overran us and we only really had Robert Earnshaw's late chance.

"Other countries will struggle in Azerbaijan. They are a lot fitter than when we played them two years ago, they pass better and like the shape they are playing in.

"We have to bounce back against Northern Ireland. If we have four points come Thursday morning we'll be happy."

Cardiff goalkeeper Martyn Margetson will join the Wales squad on Monday as cover for Danny Coyne, who has returned to his club Burnley for further treatment.
