"I don't feel under more pressure. This is the situation of international football and I know that," said Vogts.

"I don't think the fans are losing faith. They know we did well especially in the second half. They are very understanding of my boys.

"We have to learn but also work very hard. Judge me on the World Cup games when the players are all fit."

The only spark for the Scots came with the introduction at 2-0 down of James McFadden, who scored a wonderful consolation goal.

He paid tribute to goalscorer McFadden, who would have started the game had he not been lacking match practice.

"James did so well and when he scored his confidence swept over the other players. Now he needs to play more games at Everton to stay in the team."

McFadden acknowledged that a lack of first-team action at Goodison was not helping his cause.

"I'm pleased to get the goal but it was just nice to get on because I've not played much lately," he admitted.

He played down plaudits for his goal, insisting it was "quite easy".

"It was an improvement on our last performance and we were a bit unlucky not to get a draw," he added.

"Everyone will probably get depressed anyway and the Press will do their usual, but the players have to get on with it."

Scotland captain Christian Dailly insisted the team had put everything into the game.

"There's not one player who's not completely wasted after that. They are a good side, very technically gifted and with a lot of pace," he said.

"We're disappointed to have lost two, but there weren't too many chances in the game - both sides were quite solid and there were a number of pretty disciplined performances for us tonight.

"James livened us up with a great goal, but we were disappointed to have lost two quite scrappy goals."

He stressed that the players were completely behind Vogts.
