Roy Keane says he was thrilled to make a winning return to the Republic of Ireland team who beat Romania 1-0 at Lansdowne Road on Wednesday. The Manchester United midfielder ended his self-imposed exile from the Irish side after two years and says he was relieved the fans welcomed him back.
"It was fantastic," said Keane. "Everyone has been brilliant to me and it's good to be back.
"The fans' reception was something I'll remember for a long, long time."
Keane walked out on the Republic of Ireland squad during the build-up to the 2002 World Cup after a bust-up with then manager Mick McCarthy.
The 32-year-old decided to return to international duty to help Brian Kerr's side reach the next World Cup in Germany.
"It was just nice to get the game under way," added Keane.
"You try and stay focused on the match, no matter what kind of reception but it was just fantastic."
