Crowe earns Irish call
Glen Crowe has been called into the Republic's squad
Bohemians striker Glen Crowe has won two caps

Glen Crowe has been called into the Republic of Ireland squad for Tuesday night's friendly against Turkey at Lansdowne Road.

The Bohemians' striker, who has won two caps, has been brought in by manager Brian Kerr as cover after Rotherham's Alan Lee was ruled out with a knee injury.

Kerr has indicated that Birmingham's Clinton Morrison will be rested for Tuesday's and Tottenham's Gary Doherty is expected to start in attack.

The Irish boss will make at least six changes from the team which faced Russia.

Definitely out because of injury are Shay Given, John O'Shea, Lee Carsley and captain Kenny Cunningham while Matt Holland is also struggling with an ankle problem.

Among the definite starters will be Nicky Colgan, Ian Harte, Mark Kinsella and Steve Finnan.

There is speculation that Damian Duff will play on the right side of midfield with David Connolly partnering Doherty up front.

Richard Dunne and Andy O'Brien will both get a chance to stake their claim alongside Gary Breen at the heart of the defence with Cunningham ruled out of next month's vital final Euro 2004 qualifier in Switzerland.

Kerr has challenged the fringe members of his Republic of Ireland squad to stake their claim for a regular place in the team by impressing in Tuesday's friendly.

"I am glad we have this game against Turkey," said Kerr.

"We had a big squad of players in here and I am sure a few of them were disappointed not to figure against Russia, especially those who weren't even among the substitutes.

"There are people who will be looking for an opportunity on Tuesday and they'll be given the chance to make sure their time here has been valuable in the sense of getting time on the pitch".

West Brom goalkeeper Joe Murphy is expected to replace Colgan during the game and there might be a run out for Stephen McPhail, the Leeds midfielder who is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest.

Neither of those two have featured yet under Kerr since he took charge at the start of the year.

However, the big issue for Kerr could be will be to see who shapes up as the best central defensive partner for Breen in Switzerland.

"John O'Shea's injury complicates the fact we need a new partner for Gary against Turkey," said Kerr.

"We have Richard Dunne and Andy O'Brien, both of whom are good centre-halves".

O'Shea should be available for the Swiss game after being told that he will be ruled out of action for only 10 days after picking up a knee injury in Saturday's draw with Russia.
