Alan Quinn has been called up by the Republic of Ireland |
Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Alan Quinn has been called into the Republic of Ireland squad for their Euro 2004 qualifying double-header.
The 23-year-old's promotion follows rave reviews for struggling Sheffield Wednesday this season.
Quinn was a member of the Irish Under 18 team that won the European Championships in 1998 under Brian Kerr and progressed through Don Givens' Under 21 set-up.
However, injuries - including two broken legs - held up the young prospect's development.
With Kerr now senior manager, Quinn will be hoping to make his international breakthrough.
His call-up follows the withdrawals of Sunderland midfielder Jason McAteer and Leeds full-back Gary Kelly.
Birmingham striker Clinton Morrison has also been forced to pull out with a dislocated shoulder.
Manager Kerr wanted to call up winger Mark Kennedy, but was thwarted because Wolves were worried about the prospect of his hamstring injury recurring again.
Kerr's side face crucial matches against Georgia in Tbilisi on Saturday and Albania at Lansdowne Road the following Wednesday.
