Brooking says Eriksson position was not under threat |
Sir Trevor Brooking said England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has the full backing of the Football Association. FA director of development Brooking denied Eriksson's position was ever under threat after the 2-2 draw in a World Cup qualifier against Austria.
The subequent 2-1 victory in Poland eased the pressure on the Swede but Brooking maintained Eriksson would be "judged on the qualifying of 10 games".
"Sven has got the total support of the FA and the players," he added.
Speaking to BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme, Brooking continued: "The players just get amazed at how one result like that and suddenly that it would appear that the FA and everyone are set to get rid of Sven."
The England squad refused to speak to the media after the Poland victory and, although Brooking did not back the move, he did understand the reasons behind it.
He added: "I think we all accept you've got to be criticised but it is just the balance.
"It is wrong for the media then to say the players are petulant because it is not just the individuals who suffer as a result of the humiliating pieces that appear it is the family more than anything."
