England player ratings

Marks out of 10 for England after their World Cup qualifier against Poland in Chorzow.

England

Paul Robinson - 6: Poland did not ask many questions but he did everything asked of him in confident fashion, apart from fumbling a through ball before half-time.

Gary Neville - 6: His usual tenacious self until a tangle with Maciej Zurawski ended his involvement after only 32 minutes.

Ledley King - 6: Solid enough, but paid for his only mistake when he allowed himself to be drawn wide, which gave Maciej Zurawski space to lash home the equaliser.

John Terry - 8: A commanding presence at the back and showed his effectiveness at the other end of the pitch too with a neat ball to Beckham that set up the opener.

Ashley Cole - 7: Given a tough time by Kamil Kosowski but still showed willingness to get forward at every available opportunity - and one of his crosses led to England's winner.

David Beckham - 6: Played a clever ball to Defoe for the opener, but was on the back foot for most of the game and his set-piece deliveries were again disappointing.

Wayne Bridge - 8: After a clumsy start went from strength to strength and delivered a string of enticing crosses. His burgeoning partnership with Cole on the left bodes well for the future.

Steven Gerrard - 7: No spectacular long-range passes or shots but seemed happy sitting back and was quietly-effective in that role.

Frank Lampard - 7: So often the driving force when England attacked. Used the ball intelligently when deep and was always on hand to help out in the final third.

Jermain Defoe - 8 (STAR MAN): Hugely impressive. Took his goal superbly and looked sharp throughout, finding space and using the ball well when he got it.

Michael Owen - 7: Was kept quiet early on thanks to a lack of service but kept going regardless and his perseverance led to England's winner.

Substitutes

Jamie Carragher (replaced Gary Neville, 32 mins) - 6: Took over where Neville left off and ensured there was no Polish threat down his flank, although he and Beckham were far less effective going forward than Cole and Bridge on the left.

Kieron Dyer (replaced Jermain Defoe, 87 mins) - 5: Hardly saw the ball after coming on and had no time to make his mark.

Owen Hargreaves (replaced David Beckham, 90 mins) - 5: Not given enough time to have any impact on the game.
